About Us

Southeast Storm is a USA field hockey club based in the Maryland, DC, and Northern VA area. Storm is focused on creating opportunities for players to grow and develop through three levels of play:

Development Academy: No tryouts required.  This program is open to all skill levels.  Our focus is to improve your basic skills and game sense.  You will learn the game through drills, small games, and inter-squad scrimmaging.  We will teach you individual techniques, team concepts, and the rules of play.  For more information, please email southeaststorm@gmail.com

Training Academy: Tryouts required.  This program is a stepping stone to more competitive play.  Athletes will go through a tryout to see which program is the best fit.   You are on a team and will have competitive opportunities with other DMV clubs and friendly matches with other STORM teams, but there is more focus on developing  technical and tactical skills, in order to prepare for one of our club teams.

Club: A year round experiences where players tryout and are grouped into teams.  Our goal is to expose athletes to a strong team structure, a highly competitive tournament schedule, and a level of commitment in weekly practices and competitions. Our club athletes who play on our top travel teams all are looking to play in college, and many of our alumni have excellent college careers. Players who join club have the ability to move to our elite club teams. The goal for our club players is to play at their personal best and return to their high school teams as leaders or enter college ready to make an impact.

Team Placements: We hold team placements at the beginning of each season to allow players to change teams if appropriate.  This allows players who have shown improvement the opportunity to move up.  This will also be the time for players to move down if they have not met the attendance requirements, or need to further develop skills, improve game sense, or increase fitness levels.

Do I have to play every season?  We encourage our players to participate year round; however, if you are not able to do so, due to a school or personal obligation, we ask that you go through a tryout before resuming playing with STORM.  We always try to accommodate our returning players, but we may not be able to have you placed on your previous team.

All players in the Storm program are focused on learning the skills and tactics frequently only used in the club, college, and international play. We practice throughout the DC/Northern Virginia area.

Our fall season is primarily dedicated to improving outdoor play and as a supplement for many of our players who are participating simultaneously in their high school or middle school seasons at their own school.

On the U12 and U14 level, players will have one weekday practice and one playing opportunity on the weekend.  Weekends opportunities will either be an additional practice or a competitive opportunity.

On the U16 and U19 level, we understand that you are in season, so we do not schedule weekday practices during the fall.  Players will have one practice each weekend during the fall season.  Each team will also participate in at least two competitive culminating experiences at the end of the season.

U16 and U19  players practice each week of the fall season for two hour sessions. Practices are either on Saturdays or Sundays, and we attempt to minimize conflicts with high school schedules.

We participate in several scrimmages and playdays during the season. Our focus is on developing team concepts and individual skills. This allows players to excel on their high school teams and be in top form for any showcase opportunities.  All practices and most competitions are  on turf.

On the U14, U16, and U19 level, we take one team to a showcase event each November.  In the past we have participated in either the Shooting Star Showcase or the Hockey Festival.  The Shooting Star takes place in Richmond, VA, while the Festival is usually in Florida.  In 2018, we will be attending the Shooting Star Showcase.  We find that, while going to Florida is awesome, our players and families like staying closer to home at Thanksgiving and appreciate minimizing travel costs.

If you would like to be considered for the Festival or Shooting Star team or sign-up for fall hockey, you can do so on this website. If you have any questions or would like to arrange a tryout for the Shooting Star or Festival team, email southeaststorm@gmail.com.

We also offer Academy and Development opportunities each season if you are not able to make the commitment to club.  Development is the starting point where players are learning the basics of the game.  We will have inter-squad scrimmages as part of the training.  Academy is a step up from Development where players can continue to grow their game.  Academy would involve local scrimmage against other clubs or a friendly match with one of our STORM teams.

For more information on the Festival, go to www.usafieldhockey.com and  for Shooting Star  go here https://collegeconnectionathletics.com/shooting-star-tournament/

Once the fall season ends in November, we turn our thoughts to the indoor season.  Indoor is played on an indoor court with five field players and a goalie.  Boards are used as sidelines and players can bank the ball off of the boards, similar to ice hockey.  Players get a great fitness boost and lost of touches on the ball.  It is a fun and fast paced game to play and watch.  Players will need an indoor stick and indoor gloves in order to participate.

On the U12 and U14 level, players will have one or two practices per week and, depending on an individual's team placement, between three and four competitive opportunities.  Our RED teams will conclude the season by participating in the National Indoor Tournament at the Nook in Lancaster, PA

On the U16 and U19 level, players will have one or two practices per week and, depending on an individual's team placement, between three and four competitive opportunities.  Our RED teams will participate in a US Field Hockey Qualifier.  When we qualify, the teams will conclude the season by participating in the National Indoor Tournament at the Nook in Lancaster, PA (U16) and the Richmond Convention Center (U19).

We will also send at least one team to a showcase event in January.  We will participate in either the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Top Recruit Winter Escape or the Disney Showcase Tournament.

SPRING: As the temperatures start to rise, we are very excited to move outside and pick up our outdoor sticks again!  Southeast Storm offers a full spring schedule, which includes weekly practices and several competitive opportunities for each athlete.  In the spring, most of our teams participate in 7 v 7, half field play.  Our U16 and U19 Red teams participate in the Junior Premier Outdoor League or JPOL, which is full field and 11 v 11.

At the U12 level, the athletes will have one weekday practice and participate in the Freedom League in College Park, MD on the weekends.  If there is not a competitive opportunity during the week, the athletes will have two practices.

At the U14 level, the athletes will have one practice and one competition date each week.  If we do not have an upcoming competitive opportunity, the athletes will have two practices that week.  There may be times when we will have only one practice per week.

At the U16 and U19 level, athletes will primarily practice on the weekends.  There may be some weekday practices.  Our goal is to have two opportunities per week for each athlete.  There may be some weekends when you practice once or twice.  There may be some weekends when you practice Saturday and compete Sunday.  There may be some weekends when you compete Saturday and practice Sunday.  You will get your complete season schedule as soon as humanly possible prior to the start of the season.

Our top teams, which are called STORM Red, will have the opportunity to participate in JPOL.  This is a very competitive full field opportunity with other clubs in Region 7 (DE, MD, DC).  These teams will definitely have one practice and one competition per week.

We will also take at least one team to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association's Top Recruit Spring Fling.  This event is usually held in Richmond, VA.

SUMMER: During the summer season we offer opportunities for our players to continue to grow their game, but we also want them to have an opportunity to recharge.  To that end, we offer some club opportunities, but we also encourage players to take the time to attend camps, clinics, and showcases.

Our club offers the following opportunities during the summer.  Please email southeaststorm@gmail.com with any questions or to sign up for any of our summer opportunities.

1) We offer two weeks of STORM camp for our younger players (Grades rising 4th through rising 9th) at Georgetown Visitation School.  These camps are offered the last two weeks of June.

2) Depending on the level of interest from our players, we usually attend the Limelight (Lancaster, PA) and FOCUS (Williamsburg, VA) Showcases each summer.

3) Our U12's and U14's have the opportunity to travel to Virginia Beach for the Bash at the Beach.  This is a great opportunity to have some fun in the sun and compete against other club teams from across the USA in a competitive 7 v 7 tournament.

4) Open Turf:  All of our players are invited to open turf sessions at the National Cathedral School.  These sessions are offered from 4-6 PM on Wednesdays nights free of charge to our club members.  We have coaches available to work on fitness, agility, individual skills, team concepts, and game play.

5) There are several local summer leagues for our players to attend.  We send information as we receive it, but there is the Beyond Sticks Summer League in McLean, VA; Capital Summer League in Fairfax, VA; the DC Dragons League in College Park, MD; and the Washington Field Hockey Association Summer League in Washington, DC.  The DC Dragons League and WFHA is for more experienced players and college-bound athletes.
